One of the nation’s largest government construction projects is the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Consolidation Project in the White Oak section of Silver Spring, Md. The $1.4 billion project, which is being overseen by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), includes renovation of two historic buildings and construction of 17 new buildings, including laboratories and office buildings, a central utility plant, and parking garages for approximately 5,900 vehicles.
Nine buildings have been completed and are occupied, four are under construction, and several are in the planning, programming, or design phase. The project also includes building new site utilities and infrastructure, more than 2½ miles of roads, and two new bridges.
Tishman Construction, in a joint venture with Heery International, is serving as the construction manager for the GSA and is overseeing the work of 800 trades workers. Upon completion, approximately 8,900 employees will occupy the campus, which is targeting LEED Silver certification.
