Dubai’s Design District, which has already seen the likes of Zaha Hadid Architects open an office in early November, is about to welcome Foster + Partners and Santiago Calatrava as residents, soon, as well.
These most recent firms will join 30 other architecture practices that are already based in the United Arab Emirates city, according to Dezeen. Not only has Dubai been at the center of the rise of the Middle Eastern architecture market, thus making itself an attractive locale for an office, but also each of these three firms is already hard at work on major Middle Eastern projects.
ZHA unveiled its plans for the Urban Heritage Administration Centre in Saudi Arabia and a hotel in a new city in Qatar. Santiago Calatrava is hard at work on an observation tower in Dubai that is expected to rise higher than the Burj Khalifa. Meanwhile, Foster + Partners is working on a skyscraper for Dubai’s financial district and a creative hub that will be a part of the design district.

Architecture billings index takes turn for the worse
After showing signs of stabilization over the last three months, the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) plunged nearly five points in June. As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI reflects the approximate nine to twelve month lag time between architecture billings and construction spending. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reported the June ABI rating was 37.7, far lower than the 42.9 the previous month.

Working with the owner, the National Infantry Foundation, the general contractor has used this new structure to illuminate the honor, dedication and history of this unique fighting division of the United States Army.

10% of world's skyscraper construction on hold
Emporis, the largest provider of global building data worldwide, reported that 8.7% of all skyscrapers listed as "under construction" in its database had been put on hold. Most of these projects have been halted in the second half of 2008. According to Emporis statistics, the United States had been hit the worst: at the beginning of 2008, "Met 3" in Miami was the only U.S. skyscraper listed as being "on hold". In the second half of the year, 19 projects followed suit.
