Los Angeles Dodgers owners Frank and Jaime McCourt recently unveiled designs for a complete renovation and addition at historic Dodger Stadium. The $500 million plan by architecture and urban planning firms HKS of Dallas and Johnson Fain of Los Angeles features three components that will transform the Chavez Ravine landmark:
• Dodger Way—A tree-lined entrance will lead to a landscaped plaza where fans can gather behind center field. The plaza will connect to a modern promenade with restaurants, shops, and the Dodger Experience museum.
• The Green Necklace—The street setting of Dodger Way links to a perimeter around the stadium, enabling fans to walk outdoors around the park while remaining inside the stadium gates. The Green Necklace will transform acres of parking lots into a landscaped walkway connecting the plaza and promenade to the rest of the ballpark.
• Top of the Park—The Green Necklace connects to an outdoor plaza featuring 360-degree views of the downtown skyline, Santa Monica Bay, the Santa Monica and San Gabriel Mountains, and the baseball diamond.
More than 15 acres of asphalt lots will be replaced by trees and landscaping, with energy-efficient lighting. All new construction will meet LEED Silver standards. Two terraced parking garages will be built to replace the lots taken up by the new features. The $500 million estimated cost is $70 million more than the McCourts paid to buy the team.
