Practical application of Legionella prevention standards the focus of ASHRAE project

March 27, 2013

An American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers committee drafting tough new standards to prevent the waterborne bacteria Legionella is focused on how to apply the standards in the real world. “It's not the science or the engineering lacking here. It's the lack of a management system that can be applied in a practical and defensible way,” said William McCoy, ASHRAE standards committee chairman. Federal estimates show Legionnaires', a form of pneumonia, kills more than 4,000 people and sickens some 21,000 others each year.
