Sustainability tops the syllabus at net-zero energy school in Texas

Sustainability tops the syllabus at net-zero energy school in Texas

May 17, 2011

Texas-based firm Corgan designed the 152,200-sf Lady Bird Johnson Middle School in Irving, Texas, with the goal of creating the largest net-zero educational facility in the nation, and the first in the state. Energy-reducing strategies, including a geothermal HVAC system, passive solar interior daylighting, and a high-efficiency kitchen, will help the facility use 50% less energy than a standard school. On-site solar panels and wind turbines will provide the school’s energy needs, and help its 900 students in grades six through eight learn about energy as part of their new science curriculum. Local firm Charter Builders and California-based IEG Engineers complete the Building Team.

A novel solution to homelessness will open soon in Redwood City, Calif. The compact residential campus employs modular units to create individual sleeping units, most with private bathrooms. The 240 units of housing will be accompanied by shared services and community spaces. Instead of the congregate dorm-style shelters found in many U.S. cities, this approach gives each resident a private, lockable, conditioned sleeping space.

Bridging the gap: How early architect involvement can revolutionize a city’s capital improvement plans

Capital Improvement Plans (CIPs) typically span three to five years and outline future city projects and their costs. While they set the stage, the design and construction of these projects often extend beyond the CIP window, leading to a disconnect between the initial budget and evolving project scope. This can result in financial shortfalls, forcing cities to cut back on critical project features.
