Sustainable shopping center opens in Chicago's South Loop

Located in Chicago's South Loop, the Southgate Market was designed by Eckenhoff Saunders Architects, Chicago, to have more of an urban market rather than suburban mall feel, with a completely exposed concrete interior. The $55 million, 900,000-sf center houses several retail chains and other businesses. It features a glass elevator core, a rainwater-collecting cistern, an energy-efficient HVAC system, and insulated glass with low-e coating that reduces heat gain by 50%. The shopping center also features a taste of Chicago with an outdoor suspended bridge covered in ivy.
