The 2018 Jury of Fellows from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) elevated 152 member-architects to its prestigious College of Fellows, an honor awarded to members who have made significant contributions to the architecture profession. The fellows will be honored at a ceremony on June 22 at the AIA Conference on Architecture 2018 in New York City.
The fellowship program was developed to elevate those architects who have achieved a standard of excellence in the profession and made a significant contribution to architecture and society on a national level. Prospective candidates must have at least 10 years of AIA membership and demonstrated influence in at least one of the following categories:
- Promoted the aesthetic, scientific, and practical efficiency of the profession;
- Advanced the science and art of planning and building by advancing the standards of architectural education, training or practice;
- Coordinated the building industry and the profession of architecture through leadership in the AIA or other related professional organizations; or
- Advanced the living standards of people through an improved environment.
The stringent requirements result in only three percent of the AIA’s more than 91,000 members being recognized as fellows. Currently, there are 3,425 living fellows globally.
Fellows are selected by a seven-member Jury of Fellows. Two honorary fellows were also elevated this year by the 2018 Jury of Fellows in conjunction with the 2018 Jury of Honorary Fellows. The Honorary Fellows of the Institute was developed as the international counterpart to the fellowship program. It recognizes the achievements of foreign architects as individuals and also elevates before the global public and the profession, model architects who have significantly contributed to the profession on an international level. Turner edges out Perkins+Will for the top spot on BD+C's Top 200 Building Team LEED APs ranking
With 1,006 LEED Accredited Professionals on staff, Turner Construction took the top spot on Building Design+Construction’s 2009 ranking of AEC firms with the most LEED APs, published as part of the Giants 300 report. Turner added more than 580 LEED APs during the past year to surpass Perkins+Will, which held the top spot four years running.

Guggenheim and Google team up on shelter design competition
The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Google yesterday announced the launch of Design It: Shelter Competition, a global, online initiative that invites the public to use Google Earth and Google SketchUp to create and submit designs for virtual 3-D shelters for a location of their choice anywhere on Earth. The competition opened on June 8, 2009, in honor of Frank Lloyd Wright’s birthday, and closes to submissions on August 23.
