Bjarke Ingel’s firm BIG unveiled its design scheme for a transportation hub in the central Swedish city of Västerås.
Located in the middle of the city near an existing train station, the Västerås Travel Center was designed to integrate its surrounding neighborhoods in this city of 110,899.
“It will connect the areas on either side of the tracks, which currently divide the city, under a thin golden roof with a hollow center,” Dezeen reports.
A total of 129,166 sf will host a collection of bus stops, cycle paths, pedestrian areas, and train tracks, all sheltered beneath a golden sheet.
“Like a continuous thin sheet, the roof is gently lifted at its four corners, wrapping the city's vehicular infrastructure in multiple layers of public program and urban spaces,” said Ingels in a statement from BIG.
