A scaled-down plan for a renovation and expansion of the San Diego Marriott Marquis & Marina received approval from the California Coastal Commission. The $100 million waterfront project will consist of a new three-level, 35,000 sf ballroom and 35,000 sf exhibit hall. The plan is about 14,000 sf smaller than what was originally proposed, a change forced by concerns raised about it encroaching too much into the walkway between it and the neighboring Manchester Grand Hyatt, which would block water views. The new 68-foot tall Marriott Hall will offer roughly triple the meeting space of the existing structure, which will be torn down.
The 1,362-room Marriott recently underwent another $100 million makeover that included renovation of its guest rooms, a redo of the lobby and front entrance, and an overhaul of the pool area, which included two new waterfalls, pool bar and restaurant, and new lighting and sound system.
