Restoration began recently at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center in Milwaukee. Repairs of two historic buildings in the National Soldiers Home Historic District are being conducted after heavy snow caused a roof collapse in 2010 at the Old Main building. Built in 1869, the building will have its second-floor truss assembly repaired. Similar repairs will be done on Ward Memorial Theater.
“We are proud of how the local community has rallied to save the Milwaukee Soldiers Home’s most threatened buildings,” says a representative from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. “We applaud the Milwaukee VA for their commitment to stabilizing Old Main and the Ward Memorial Theater, and look forward to continuing our work to create a vision for the district’s future.”
