The Construction Association of Michigan (CAM) presented its CAM Expo 2009 at the Rock Financial Showplace in Novi, MI, on February 4 and 5. This was the 25th anniversary of the CAM Expo, which began in 1985. CAM Expo is a showcase for new construction products, equipment, tools, and services.
The CAM 123rd Annual Meeting took place on the first day of CAM Expo. This luncheon hosted CAM members and gave an up-to-date presentation on the status of all CAM departments, as well as the “changing of the guard” of the CAM board of directors. This year's annual meeting also featured guest speaker John Austin, executive director of the New Economy Initiative for Southeast Michigan (NEI), a multiyear, multimillion-dollar effort on the part of Michigan foundations and national foundations to support the transformation of the Southeast Michigan economy.
New to CAM Expo 2009 was a Green Building Products Showcase, an area dedicated to exhibitors with environmentally friendly building products or services. Also new to the show was a Contractors' Showcase and Reception, a special area for general contracting firms to display their services.
CAMTEC, the training and education division of CAM, sponsored several classes during both days of the Expo. A wide variety of classes were offered in the areas of Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Act (MIOSHA), Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), employment law, construction safety, and Miss Dig, among many others.
CAM has over 3,200 corporate member firms and is governed by a 12-member board of directors elected by the membership. CAM promotes and supports the construction industry through ongoing legislative relations; leadership on key issues such as regulatory reform, economic development, continuing education, labor relations service; and complete safety training programs and consultation.
