The heavy rains and high winds of Hurricane Irene didn’t cause any problems for a Con Edison green roof in New York City. The roof contains sedum, a plant that adapts well to drought and handles periods of heavy rain well. The storm’s rain cleared quickly off the roof without leaving puddles that could have eventually damaged root systems.
A Columbia University PhD. candidate working on the roof project credited a well-designed drainage system. He added that in areas where wind is a concern, green roof companies can provide a mesh covering that helps to prevent soil loss, and wind uplift analysis that measures a green roof system’s resistance to wind pressure can be performed to ensure a sound design.
