The 35-story hotel tower portion of the 4 million-sq.-ft. Mohegan Sun Casino expansion project in Uncasville, Conn., opened April 23. Designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox, New York, with Perini Building Corp., Framingham, Mass., as construction manager, the "crystal-like" curtain-walled tower contains 1,200 rooms, an indoor pool, landscaped terrace, and health spa. When added to the existing 630,000-sq.-ft. casino, the $1 billion "Project Sunburst" expansion makes the resort, owned by the Mohegan Tribal Nation, one of the largest private development projects on the East Coast. Direct internal access is provided from the hotel to the casino, which includes an added 115,000 square feet that opened last September. The expansion also includes a new 170,000-sq.-ft. convention center, 225,000 square feet of retail space, a 10,000-seat entertainment arena, 350-seat cabaret, nine restaurants and lounges, and 10,000 additional structured parking spaces.
