WASHINGTON, DC; CLEVELAND, OH; PHOENIX, AZ (5 April 2009) – Roger (Jui-Chen) Chang, PE, LEED AP joins nationally-recognized architecture/engineering firm Westlake Reed Leskosky as Principal and Director of Sustainability. He directs sustainable design and engineering with a particular focus in environmental quality, energy efficiency and building simulation modeling. He also serves as a Lead Mechanical Designer.
A green building and energy efficiency leader with LEED accreditation and professional engineering registration, Mr. Chang’s appointment enhances the firm’s integrated capabilities in engineering and sustainability with leadership talent. He is working closely with Monica Green, AIA, CSI, CCS, LEEDTM AP, Principal, and LEED Specialist at Westlake Reed Leskosky, on integrated building solutions, advancing the firm’s initiatives beyond LEED criteria. This enterprise analyzes the firm’s projects in regard to: energy use, water use, materials use, stewardship and education, operations and maintenance, and occupant comfort and health.
Named ASHRAE 2006 New Face of Engineering, Mr. Chang is a noted, frequent speaker on sustainable design, and has run LEED training workshops. He brings considerable experience in design, project management, sustainability consulting and building simulation modeling on major performing arts centers, museums, and laboratories.
His professional experience prior to joining Westlake Reed Leskosky involved a number of LEED certified projects, including Platinum certified, one for which he served as lead mechanical engineer and another as lead sustainability consultant. Mr. Chang’s special expertise also includes life-cycle cost analysis, building energy modeling, and thermal simulation tools. Examples of his application of innovative techniques and tools include mechanical designs for special environments requiring stringent environmental controls, such as museum and gallery spaces.Â
Mr. Chang is a member of ASHRAE, has lectured for ASHRAE, the National Society of Professional Engineers, and SimBuild, and has reviewed papers for GreenBuild, the Journal of Architectural Engineering, and ASHRAE Transactions. He has participated in advisory sessions for the World Business Council on Sustainable Development, Rutgers-National Science Foundation Partnership, and City University of New York (CUNY) Building Performance Consortium. Mr. Chang is co-chair of the committee on sustainability for the architecture program at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, where he also served as a curriculum coordinator and visiting lecturer in building systems design.
Mr. Chang received his Master and Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he first became interested in building energy use and indoor air quality, including research work at the National Institute of Standards and Technology and study in low-energy buildings under the Kann-Rasmussen Foundation.
