New York-based firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro has unveiled the preliminary concept renderings for the United States Olympic Museum, which is scheduled for groundbreaking in spring 2016 in Colorado Springs, Colo., and slated to open before the Pyeongchang Olympic Winter Games in 2018.

According to the firm’s founding partner, Elizabeth Diller, the design was inspired by the movement of athletes, as it “spirals up and outwards from a central atrium, drawing the public in at its base and propelling them up through the galleries.”

The building will frame a new downtown public plaza below the view of Pike’s Peak, and extends a new axis to the America the Beautiful Park West, the firm said in a statement.

United States Olympic Museum facts:
Location: Colorado Springs, Colo.
Size: 60,000 sf
Collaborators: Anderson Mason Dale Architects of Denver (architect of record); Gallagher and Associates of Washington, D.C. (exhibit designer); Pacific Studio of Seattle (exhibit fabricator); and Barrie Projects of Cleveland (national museum consultant). GE Johnson of Colorado Springs will serve as general contractor.
