Lockwood Greene finds lasting cure in industrial ills
If the economy were a disease and the industrial building sector were a living being, it would be at death's door. But the pharmaceutical side of the market has been just what the doctor ordered for E/A Lockwood Greene, Spartanburg, S.C.
Though industrial projects composed 51% of the firm's building work in 2001, diversification into healthier segments such as pharmaceutical, health care, R&D laboratories and foods kept Lockwood Greene high on this year's list of top revenue-generating E/As. Still, the firm's commercial, industrial and institutional revenues fell nearly $82 million last year from 2000, but its $122.8 million dropped it only one place, from fourth to fifth, in the E/A category from last year's survey.
But just staying in the game is viewed as a plus, given the market downturn and internal constraints put on capital spending. Those arose from the difficulties between Lockwood Greene's healthy contractor owner, J.A. Jones, Charlotte, N.C., and their troubled German parent, Philip Holzmann AG, which recently filed for bankruptcy. That situation should soon resolve itself, however. On the block for months, Jones expects to announce a new parent sometime this summer.
Meanwhile, Lockwood Greene has kept its focus. "Certainly our customers have spent less, but industries like pharmaceuticals and foods manufacture products that tend to be less impacted by economic conditions. We've had growth continuing in those areas," says Fred Brune, Lockwood Greene's president and CEO.
Brune adds that his firm has increased its flexibility and adapted to differing delivery methods and projects of varying size. "In this environment, we've seen a lot of small and midsize projects," he says. "A lot have focused on providing services to improve the efficiency of plant manufacturing." In addition, the firm has been performing more renovation work, Brune notes.
The E/A also has leveraged its design-build capabilities during this market downturn. "Customers have fewer resources committed to capital projects. That favors us," says Brune.
