Factory worker deaths in Italy raise questions on building codes after earthquakes

Italian officials are questioning seismic building standards and inspection procedures in the aftermath of two damaging earthquakes.


June 28, 2012

Earthquakes of magnitude 5.8 and 6.0 recently rocked the Emilia Romagna region in Italy, killing 17. Many of the victims were workers killed by collapsing factories and warehouses, a number of which were prefabricated. Officials are questioning seismic building standards and inspection procedures in the aftermath.
