The Sheikh of Dubai announced that construction will soon start for the Museum of the Future, the Creators Project reports.
Though details of the project’s size have not yet been released, renderings circulating online show it will be shaped like a horizontal oblong with a hollow middle. The Verge compares it to a “lopsided torus,” or an “aerodynamic donut.”
Compared to the renderings of people around the building, it seems like the museum will be massive. The Wall Street Journal reports that the edifice’s metallic exterior will be carved with lines of the sheikh’s poetry, shining brightly under the desert sun in Dubai’s financial district.
The museum’s contents will be equally as ethereal, as it will exhibit prototypes of technology, or as Dubai’s Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum put it during the official unveiling, “an incubator for ideas and real designs—a global destination for inventors and entrepreneurs.”
“The future belongs to those who can imagine it, design it, and execute it,” the Sheikh said in a statement. “Here in the UAE we think differently. While others try to predict the future, we create it.”
The Verge reports that the budget is an estimated $136 million. As of now, the museum is slated for completion in 2017.
