The Miami Beach City Commission on Wednesday selected the development team led by Rem Koolhaas' OMA and property developers Tishman and UIA to redevelop the Miami Beach Convention Center area. The winning team, which beat out a submission by Danish studio Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), also includes local architect TVSdesign and landscape architects MVVA and Raymond Jungles.
OMA's plan, created by partners-in-charge Shohei Shigematsu and Koolhaas, will add a hotel on top of the center and a large stepped park atop new underground parking. It will reduce the overall footprint of the site and create new connections with the urban fabric of Miami Beach.
"We are thrilled to be chosen to develop one of the most significant urban districts in the U.S.," Shigematsu and Koolhaas said in a statement. "Our design will reintegrate Miami's vital convention center with its neighbors, offering new facilities as well as amplifying the character of this exciting city."
