A new $90 million, 250,000-sf classroom and laboratory facility with a 450-seat auditorium for the College of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign is aiming for LEED Platinum. A three-story structure and a five-story structure will be connected by an atrium. To achieve net-zero energy use, KJWW Engineering Consultants, headquartered in Rock Island, Ill., will employ a 300-kW photovoltaic array, wind turbines, displacement ventilation and chilled beam cooling systems, occupancy sensor controls for light and ventilation, and a passive solar design.
