After the May 22, 2011, EF-5 tornado destroyed St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Joplin, Mo., architects and engineers analyzed how the nine-story structure reacted to the storm.
What they learned from the destruction of the medical center is being incorporated into the design of Mercy Hospital Joplin, now under construction. The new hospital’s design has been described as a hardened fortress.
