The Culture Shed, a proposed 170,000-sf project for New York City's Hudson Yards development, could be the ultimate in "pop-up" facilities. As designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro and David Rockwell of Rockwell Group, the structure would consist of a movable synthetic shell that would slide out to cover a public plaza. Programming for the space could be diverse, from Fashion Week events to art installations to performances featuring collaborations between musicians and visual artists.
The plan also includes a 150-foot-tall apartment building by the same design team. When not in use, the "shed" shell would fold into this structure. Abutting the High Line at West 30th Street near 11th Avenue, the site is also slated to include indoor and outdoor galleries and a café.
The City Planning Commission has submitted the proposal to the local community board for a review.
