Faced with an aging campus with cramped classrooms, crumbling infrastructure, and outdated technology, La Jolla (Calif.) Country Day School recently completed a modernization that will add a 7,800-sf kindergarten. An early childhood/preschool village houses classrooms and computer, science, and language art facilities. The school earned LEED Gold certification thanks to the use of high-efficiency HVAC equipment, natural ventilation, and natural daylight.

Construction employment declined in all but 19 communities nationwide this June as compared to June-2008, according to a new analysis of metropolitan-area employment data released today by the Associated General Contractors of America. Lincoln High School in Tacoma, Wash., was built in 1913 and spent nearly a century morphing into a patchwork of outdated and confusing additions. A few years ago, the Tacoma School District picked Lincoln High School, dubbed “Old Main,” to be the first high school in the district to be part of its newly launched Small Learning Communities program.
