SCA Americas pursues largest ever LEED-CI certification

August 11, 2010

The SCA Americas corporate headquarters is Philadelphia’s largest corporate interior space that is currently pursuing LEED-CI certification. LEED for Commercial Interiors (LEED-CI) was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council specifically to reward environmental excellence in tenant interior architecture and construction. SCA Americas-a $13 billion Swedish-based manufacturer of hygiene products, packaging solutions and publication papers-determined LEED certification and environmental excellence to be critical aspects of the design of its new headquarters. SCA’s new workplace is among the first few projects in Philadelphia and one of the first in the United States to pursue this designation.

SCA Americas is the second-largest tenant of Philadelphia's Cira Centre skyscraper. The company commissioned EwingCole, a Philadelphia-based architecture/interior design firm, to help bring its vision to life in the company’s 81,200 sf space. Creating an innovative concept-based design that focuses on inclusiveness and commitment to social responsibility, the workspace was developed in collaboration with SCA employees. SCA Americas worked closely with EwingCole and Francisco Laurier, ASID, for more than two years to design a spacious, naturally-lit space that fosters teamwork and stimulates creativity. Design strategies ranged from increasing access to daylight, to recycling construction materials, to reducing water usage. The project is currently pursuing LEED-CI Silver Certification.
