The Van Alen Institute, a nonprofit architectural organization, teamed with the West Palm Beach Community Redevelopment Agency to launch two new competitions.
The Shore to Core design competition and research competition will explore the built environment of waterfront cities, using the growing and diverse West Palm Beach, Fla., as the model.
“How can we recreate an urban core so its design is intelligent, flexible, and responsive to the needs of residents and visitors?” the Shore to Core website asks. “Many aspects of our lives are shaped by the environments in which we spend our time, and by developing a better understanding of these relationships, we can use design to improve wellbeing in cities.”
Two winning teams in the design competition will be selected to participate in a three-month design process and receive $45,000 to develop their work. The research team will receive $40,000 to develop its work and $10,000 to implement a pilot study.
Teams can pre-register before July 27, which allows them to receive project updates and answers about the request. The deadline for registration and electronic submission of the Request for Qualifications is 11:59 p.m. ET on August 21.
