SIGAL Construction Corporation was awarded the Savoy Elementary modernization by the District of Columbia, Office of Public Education Facilities Modernization in April 2008.
The school will undergo a complete renovation as well as the demolition and rebuild of the school's gymnasium. The renovation will include a new entrance and curtainwall system, new roof and HVAC, as well as the rehab of classrooms, offices, a new multipurpose room, and cafeteria. The new school gymnasium will include an underground parking garage and two-level gym, with the addition of a few second story classrooms. SIGAL will also install new outdoor playground equipment.
Savoy Elementary was originally built in 1968. With the help of Bowie Gridley Architects and SIGAL Construction, the project is anticipating LEED Certification upon completion. The 96,800-square-foot renovation project is just finishing up the demolition phase, and new construction is anticipated to begin at the beginning of next month. The children attending Savoy Elementary are expected to return for the 2009-2010 school year.
