Sika Sarnafil announces 2010 roofing Contractor Project of the Year winners

Entrants Judged on Project Complexity, Design Uniqueness, Project Importance, Craftsmanship and Creative Problem Solving.

March 7, 2011

CANTON, MA – Sika Sarnafil announced winners of its 2010 Contractor Project of the Year Competition. Twelve contractors were recognized for outstanding workmanship in completing a project using a Sika Sarnafil thermoplastic membrane for roofing or waterproofing applications.  A winner and two finalists were chosen from each of four different categories: Low Slope, Steep Slope, Waterproofing and Sustainability.

First place in the Low Slope category was Hayden Building & Maintenance Corporation of West Nyack, NY, for the reroofing of a major Anheuser Busch beverage container production facility.  This facility produces nearly 12 million cans per day and operates around the clock.  Hayden completed the project two weeks ahead of schedule and without any interruption to plant operations.  Taking second place in this grouping was Chamberlin Roofing & Waterproofing of Dallas, TX, and third place went to Craftmasters of Decatur, IL.

In the Steep Slope category, Black Roofing, Inc., of Boulder, CO, was awarded first place for their efforts at the Denver Art Museum.  This facility’s extreme slope was a safety challenge requiring crews to be tied off to safety lines at all times.  The new roof was completed on time and without leaks and with no worker injuries, which resulted in high praise from the museum’s facility management team.  Warburton’s, Inc., of Pleasant Grove, UT, was the second place finisher and Bi-State Roof Systems, Inc., of Valley Park, MO was the third place finalist.

Meade Construction of Arizona, Inc., based in Fredericktown, OH, took first place in the Waterproofing class for the Casino Arizona Resort in Scottsdale, AZ.  The company transformed four adjoining rooftops of varying levels into first class outdoor accommodations that included a restaurant and a spa.  The stunning outdoor space is very much in keeping with a luxury resort.  Second place in this category went to Best Contracting Services, Inc., of Gardena, CA, and third place to Horizon Roofing, Inc., of St. Cloud, MN.

In the Sustainability category, All-American Exterior Solutions, Inc., of Lake Zurich, IL, was awarded first place for the roofing system on the new FedEx cargo facility at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago.  This installation included a 165,000 sq. ft. vegetated green roof which is the largest at any U.S. airport and will help to mitigate more than two million gallons of storm water annually.  In second place was F.J.A. Christiansen Roofing Co., Inc., of Milwaukee, WI, and in third place for this grouping was National Roofing and Sheet Metal Co., Inc., of Burton, MI.

More than 30 contractors from around the U.S. submitted projects for evaluation in this annual competition.  Entries were judged on project complexity, design uniqueness, project importance, craftsmanship, and creative problem solving.  First place winners were awarded cash prizes and all finalists were presented with recognition plaques.

Congratulations to the winners of the 2010 Contractor Project of the Year competition,” said Brian J. Whelan, Senior Vice President of Sika Sarnafil. “We are proud to honor these award winning project teams and salute them as champions of design excellence, craftsmanship and creative problem solving."
