The new Education and Research Building, a nine-story biomedical research building at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, will support the development of therapeutics for some of the world’s most challenging diseases in a high-performance, sustainable environment.
The 350,000-sf facility will include space for 77 principal investigators and house the Medical School’s Horae Gene Therapy Center, the Departments of Neurology and Neurobiology, the Program in Molecular Medicine, a new Program in Human Genetics & Evolutionary Biology, and an FDA-compliant manufacturing facility for clinical trial therapeutics.
The project is being designed to meet ambitious sustainability goals, including achieving Net Zero Energy and LEED Gold certification and the integration of a high-performance double-skin facade and geothermal heat pumps. The interior features natural daylighting and transparency, active circulation, and large social and interaction spaces.
The project is slated to open in the fall of 2023. Shawmut Design and Construction will be the project’s construction manager.

Biomedical research center in Texas to foster scientific collaboration
The new Health and Biomedical Sciences Center at the University of Houston will facilitate interaction between scientists in a 167,000-sf, six-story research facility. The center will bring together researchers from many of the school’s departments to collaborate on interdisciplinary projects. The facility also will feature an ambulatory surgery center for the College of Optometry, the first of its kind for an optometry school. The College Sustainability Report Card 2011 evaluated colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada with the 300 largest endowments—plus 22 others that asked to be included in the GreenReportCard.org study—on nine categories, including climate change, energy use, green building, and investment priorities. More than half (56%) earned a B or better, but 6% got a D. Can you guess which is the greenest of these: UC San Diego, Dickinson College, University of Calgary, and Dartmouth?
