Columbus, OH – It’s not what we do that’s important; it’s why we do it. Reflecting on the wisdom  of Simon Sinek, renowned author of “Start with Why”, Greg Mare, URS Columbus’ new Director of Healthcare  Planning and Design cites this as the single most important motivator for his 40 years as a healthcare architect.

That passion and commitment has catapulted Mare to be recognized as one of the country’s most sought after experts in the delivery of patient centered care, operational effectiveness, healing environments and his innovative, collaborative approach to the design process.

“Our healthcare clients are increasingly focused on the ‘systemization’ of delivering services to their patients,” stated Jim Linthicum, URS Vice President, National Director, Facilities Business Line. “Greg’s expertise in helping clients translate their business initiatives into long-term strategies to address contemporary concerns of rising healthcare costs, consolidations and patient outcomes is enhanced by URS’ commitment to quality, and our philosophy of pulling the best resources together to serve a client.”

Mare’s work is comprised of some of Ohio’s largest health systems, including Cleveland Clinic, OhioHealth and Cincinnati Children’s, and national health systems, including Carolinas Health System, University of Wisconsin Health, SUNY Upstate Medical University and Oklahoma University Medical Center.

In addition, URS has announced the hire of Jeff Willcox as Senior Director of Healthcare Program Development. Willcox has more than 35 years of national healthcare program development experience in  firms such as NBBJ, HDR, FLAD Architects, and Hillier Architecture. As Senior Director of Healthcare Program Development, Jeff is responsible for the identification and qualification of new national health providers, plus developing strategic implementation programs with multiple offices, key sales personnel, and national consultants for this market growth. He will help establish brand recognition, and develop new client opportunities with health systems and academic medical centers.

“Jeff is client focused,” stated Jim Linthicum, URS Vice President, National Director, Facilities Business Line. “His comprehensive client development experience in the healthcare, medical research and university markets will help expand URS’ National Healthcare presence.”

Bridging the gap: How early architect involvement can revolutionize a city’s capital improvement plans

Capital Improvement Plans (CIPs) typically span three to five years and outline future city projects and their costs. While they set the stage, the design and construction of these projects often extend beyond the CIP window, leading to a disconnect between the initial budget and evolving project scope. This can result in financial shortfalls, forcing cities to cut back on critical project features.
