This week on The Weekly, BD+C editors spoke with leaders from Kaiser + Path, Page, and RCLCO Real Estate Advisors on three timely topics:
• State of the market for mass timber construction
• Why demand for microhospitals is growing, and where they make sense
• 5 key building sectors to watch amid COVID-19
SEGMENT 1: Brad Hunter, Managing Director with RCLCO Real Estate Advisors, talks about the short- and long-term market forecast for several key commercial building sectors, including hospitality, office, retail, and rental housing. The data and research is from RCLCO’s Mid-Year 2020 Sentiment Survey.
SEGMENT 2: Lisa Bradley, AIA, Associate Principal with Page, talks all things "microhospitals," the healthcare sector's newest building type. Lisa talks about: why demand for mini-hospitals is growing, and the business case for building this type of facility; what differentiates micro-hospitals from standard hospitals and outpatient facilities; and design challenges specific to microhospitals.
SEGMENT 3: Emily Dawson, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, Partner and Architect with Kaiser + Path, talked about the growing market for mass timber construction. The conversation revolved around a 156-page report, which her firm coauthored, that proposes significant increases in the demand and use of mass timber in construction, and what needs to happen—from the standpoint of investment in forestland and manufacturing, as well as code changes—for mass timber to achieve the report’s ambitious outlook.
