The University of Maine recently unveiled the world’s largest 3D printer said to be able to create entire neighborhoods.

The machine is four times larger than a preceding model that was first tested in 2019. The older model was used to create a 600 sf single-family home made of recyclable wood fiber and bio-resin materials.

The new model, dubbed the “Factory of the Future 1.0,” combines robotics operations with new sensors, high-performance computing, and artificial intelligence. Structures built using this method can be deconstructed and then the 3D printed parts can be ground up to be reused by the printer.

Researchers plan to test other formulas, including more bio-based feedstocks from wood residuals of materials, that can be used by the printer. In the near future, the new printer will be used to create a 50-foot boat and houses for homeless people.
