Zero Energy Buildings + Homes'  Call for Editorial Contributions & Contributors

Zero Energy Buildings + Homes'  Call for Editorial Contributions & Contributors

By Rob Cassidy | August 11, 2010

BD+C will publish its 8th Annual White Paper on Green Buildings, "Zero Energy Buildings + Homes," in November-and you can contribute to it. We're looking for highly qualified experts (or teams of experts) to write individual chapters (about 2,000-3,000 words). We've started the outline here, but we'd like your suggestions about additional chapters. What did we miss? Help us shape this important report. E-mail Editor-in-Chief Rob Cassidy with suggestions.

Proposed Editorial Overview (your suggestions welcome)

1. Defining ‘Zero Energy Buildings' and ‘Zero Energy Homes'
• The 4 definitions (maybe more) of "zero energy" and their practical meaning
• Defining role of ZEBs/ZEHs in combating climate change, conserving energy
• Meeting the goals of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007

2. ZEBs / ZEHs in Green Building Certification Systems
How ZEBs and ZEHs figure in LEED 3.0, Green Globes, Green Guide for Health Care, CHPS, NAHB, ASHRAE 189.1, and other green rating systems

3. U.S. ZEB / ZEH Case Studies: What We've Learned So Far
Review of current ZEB/ZEH projects (notably NREL's Research Support Facilities Building in Colo.) to see what's working, what needs to be refined

4. Global ZEB / ZEH Case Studies: What the U.S. Can Learn
Are Europeans and Asians ahead of U.S. Building Teams on ZEBs? We'll examine projects in Germany, the U.K., and China to answer that question.

5. How ZEBs May Change the Design + Construction Model
If saving energy is the key factor, will MEP engineers be in the driver's seat on major ZEB building projects? A review of ZEB design/construction dynamics.

6. What's on the Horizon for ZEBs and ZEHs?
A look ahead at technical problems, cost barriers, and other issues facing the ZEB movement-and where new ZE technology may take us (zero-energy communities, anyone?) Also: the DOE's ZE Comm'l Buildings Consortium.
