When Ilhan and Kamer Eser embarked on building their new house in the California countryside, they decided to build it exactly the way they wanted it. Their new net-zero home is powered by renewable energy, and the energy-efficient design features metal panels—with vibrant Valspar coatings.
Typically, when designing a net-zero home, energy efficiency is a very high priority, allowing a more modestly sized solar and geothermal system to provide all the energy the home uses throughout the year. The home has a number of energy-saving features, including a solar reflective Valspar Fluropon SR coating on the roof to minimize the cooling load.
Ilhan, the CEO of MORIN, a Kingspan Group Company, designed the house himself without an architect and served as the general contractor. He chose Kingspan insulated metal panels for the walls and roof, giving the home a sleek, modern appearance and an R-value of 42.
“When people think ‘metal’ they think of agricultural silos or warehouses,” said Ilhan. “Everyone we told was like, ‘Are you sure you want a residential metal building?’”
Leveraging a long-standing relationship with Valspar, the Esers received samples of Valspar’s Kameleon™ Colors—pearlescent paints that appear to shift in color based on the lighting and viewing angle. These prismatic colors use mica flakes, creating a consistent iridescent gradient look for even dispersion of color.
Valspar’s Kameleon Colors come in a range of gradient pearlescent colors, including custom colors. The Esers selected Valspar's Kameleon Dusty Rose, to compliment the setting of the home.
“It fits with nature,” said Ilhan. “It is a color, or more precisely, a multicolor paint, where in the morning or during the daytime it is more green and yellow, and in the evening it turns from silver to almost a bronze, brick color or dark brown.”
