When the Humane Society of Silicon Valley set out to build a new Animal Community Center in Milpitas, California, it sought to be the first such facility in the country with a LEED Gold rating by the U.S. Green Building Council. The Humane Society carefully designed the new facility to be as sustainable as possible.
All aspects of the project were carefully scrutinized, including the building site, project materials, and the building’s water efficiency and energy performance, as well as on-site renewable energy production and construction waste management practices. The project used construction materials with recycled content and Valspar coatings.
The exterior of the center contains nearly 1,000 sf of metal panels with a colorful palette of 70% PVDF coatings. These reflective coatings contribute to the building’s energy efficiency by lowering cooling costs.
The exceptional energy performance of this LEED-certified project helps reduce the operating costs of the agency, freeing up resources to achieve their mission to save and enhance lives.
