The currently under construction IKEA at Westbahnhof will showcase the retail company’s new store concept that focuses on current shopping trends and the dramatically changing shopping behavior.
The seven-story building includes green façades, restaurants, a green roof terrace, and extra open space for customers. Something the concept does not include is parking. As more and more customers forgo carrying their purchases home and instead opt for delivery, the new IKEA concept delivers all products that are larger than “small items” to a customer’s home within a maximum of 24 hours.
The goal of Ikea at Westbahnhof is to become the meeting point for the entire district. A direct connection to the public transport network will be included and public space will be accessible outside of IKEA hours (this includes the green roof terrace). The façade on the ground floor has been set back to create an arcade and a sidewalk that is twice as wide as before. This will help increase safety in the tram stop area and create a more pleasant atmosphere for pedestrians.
