The 12-year-old Edgewood Retirement Community in Andover, Mass., underwent a major 40,000-sf expansion and renovation that added 60 patient care beds in the long-term care unit, a new 17,000-sf, 40-bed cognitive impairment unit, and an 80-seat informal dining bistro. Designs by Margulies Perruzzi Architects, Boston, also included relocation of the facility’s wellness and rehabilitation clinic, expansion and remodel of the kitchen, and upgrades to the dining room, lobby, activity and day rooms, and support spaces. The facility’s large terrace also was spruced up. Landscape and clinical design services were provided by Levi + Wong Design Associates, Concord, Mass.

Smithsonian building $45 million green lab
Thanks to a $45 million federal appropriation to the Smithsonian Institution, the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Edgewater, Md., has broken ground on what is expected to be one of the most energy-efficient laboratories in the country. The 69,000-sf lab is targeting LEED Gold and is expected to use 37% less energy and emit 37% less carbon dioxide than a similar building.
