T. Christopher Cooper, RN, MHA, MIM, has joined Cannon Design as Principal.
A seasoned clinician, healthcare executive and industrial engineer, Cooper’s focus is on operational, strategic and design initiatives and their interrelationship as transformative tools for healthcare delivery. As a Principal within Confluence by Cannon Design, Chris will leverage his advanced clinical and healthcare advisory skills to support a wide variety of facility and non-facility challenges facing Cannon Design’s clients.
An essential component of the firm’s healthcare practice, Confluence by Cannon Design provides healthcare organizations with innovative, performance-based solutions designed to support strategic planning, operational optimization, experiential design, service excellence and enhanced financial performance.
As part of the advisory services team, Chris will serve in the role of senior nurse executive and clinical thought leader, providing insight on thefuture of healthcare, strategic planning, clinical process optimization, and experiential design.
Prior to joining Cannon Design, Cooper served as a Manager in the Health Industries Advisory Practice at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, where he was engaged in strategic planning, physician alignment, and operational improvement consulting and was a Subject Matter Expert in Pediatrics and Oncology. Previous to that association Cooper held positions at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, where he served as the Clinical Director of Hematology, Oncology and Transplant services; and at Sg2, an international healthcare intelligence, research and consulting organization in Chicago, where he served as Director of Cancer and Nursing Services.
A registered nurse, Cooper holds both a Master of Health Administration and Master of Information Management from Washington University in St. Louis and a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN. He received his Associate of Science in Nursing at Phillips Beth Israel School of Nursing in New York City.

Vietnam business center will combine office and residential space
The 300,000-sm VietinBank Business Center in Hanoi, Vietnam, designed by Foster + Partners, will have two commercial towers: the first, a 68-story, 362-meter office tower for the international headquarters of VietinBank; the second, a five-star hotel, spa, and serviced apartments. A seven-story podium with conference facilities, retail space, restaurants, and rooftop garden will connect the two towers. ARRA-funded Navy hospital aims for LEED Gold
The team of Clark/McCarthy, HKS Architects, and Wingler & Sharp are collaborating on the design of a new naval hospital at Camp Pendleton in Southern California. The $451 million project is the largest so far awarded by the U.S. Navy under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The 500,000-sf, 67-bed hospital, to be located on a 70-acre site, will include facilities for emergency and primary care, specialty care clinics, surgery, and intensive care. The Building Team is targeting LEED Gold.

Arizona outpatient cancer center to light a ‘lantern of hope’
Construction of the Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center in Gilbert, Ariz., is under way. Located on the Banner Gateway Medical Center campus near Phoenix, the three-story, 131,000-sf outpatient facility will house radiation oncology, outpatient imaging, multi-specialty clinics, infusion therapy, and various support services. Cannon Design incorporated a signature architectural feature called the “lantern of hope” for the $90 million facility.

Maryland replacement hospital expands care, changes name
The new $120 million Meritus Regional Medical Center in Hagerstown, Md., has 267 beds, 17 operating rooms with high-resolution video screens, a special care level II nursery, and an emergency room with 53 treatment rooms, two trauma rooms, and two cardiac rooms.

Accor North America launches green hotel pilot program
Accor North America, a division of Accor Hospitality, has announced that it will pilot the Green Key Eco-Rating Program within its portfolio in the United States in 2010. Green Key is the first program of its kind to rank, certify and inspect hotels and resorts based on their commitment to sustainable "green" practices; the Accor North America pilot will involve 20 properties.

Architecture Billings Index flat in May, according to AIA
After a slight decline in April, the Architecture Billings Index was up a tenth of a point to 42.9 in May. As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI reflects the approximate nine to twelve month lag time between architecture billings and construction spending. Any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings.
