Between 2010 and 2015, the United States saw an increase in the share of renter households of 9.4%, the fourth highest of any country examined in RentCafé’s most recent study. The only countries higher than the U.S. were the United Kingdom (22%), Ireland (12%), and Denmark (11.7%).
The United States does not rank in the top five in terms of countries with the highest percentage of renters, however. Switzerland has the highest percentage of renters at 56.6%. It is also the only country with more renters than homeowners. Hong Kong (49%), Germany (48.1%), South Korea (44.8%), and Austria (44.3%) round out the top five. The United States ranked 10th at 36.2%.
Conversely, the Russian Federation and Singapore experienced the largest declines in renter household ratio at 27.5% and 13.3% respectively. Along with Slovakia, these countries also have the highest homeownership rates.
