Construction on a new residential complex in Abu Dhabi’s uber-green Masdar City, has begun, UAE Interact reports.

The planned city was developed using sustainable development approaches. According to the CEO of Masdar, Dr. Ahmad Belhoul, the project is “built on knowledge and talent, home to leading research and development facilities, a free zone with world-class businesses, and soon a residential complex.”

The residential development will have 500 units of one- and two-bedroom apartments. All material construction will be verified sustainable materials, and the final building will meet LEED Gold and 3 Pearl Estidama sustainability criteria.

With pedestrian-friendly walkways connecting the residences to retail facilities and other amenities, developers hope it will attract more residents and businesses that are looking for a community “focused on innovation and sustainability.”

Construction of the residences fit perfectly with Abu Dhabi’s rising demand for housing, as its average annual population growth of 7.7% has outpaced inventory.
